What Do You KNOW To Be True?
The best thing I’ve ever done for myself is to consistently practice telling myself the truth. I have done this by stopping when a negative thought comes into my mind and asking myself , what do I know to be true? This simple questions forces me to tell myself the truth and it makes me very aware of the lies I believe.
Think about it. How many times do you tell yourself something like one of the following lines.
- I’m not smart enough
- I’m not as good as so-and-so
- I could never do that
- I have to learn more before I can do x…
- They don’t like me.
- They will say no.
- I am ______________________.
And if you stop and ask yourself what do you know to be true, here is what the above thoughts might look like:
I’m not smart enough. What I know to be true is that I am a work in process. I am smart enough, good enough and capable of more than I give myself credit for. I am not as good as so-and-so.What I know to be true is I am ME and comparing is not healthy. I know I am enough and so-and-so is enough. I could never do that. What I know to be true is that I’ve not yet tried. The truth is I do not know if I could do that. And if I really can’t do something, then then truth is I can not do that thing, my strengths lie elsewhere. I have to learn more before I can do x…What I know to be true is that I will never know enough. I could research forever but sooner or later I must start. What I know to be true is I am ready. They do not like me.What I know to be true is that I don’t know what they think. I often make up a story in my head and then look for validation. They will say no.The truth is I do not know because I have not asked. I am ______________________.Whatever I ‘m telling myself, I stop and ask myself what the truth is. Often what I’m telling myself is not what the truth is.
Changing our mindset and our self talk starts with telling ourselves the truth.
