Get accountable

If you are struggling to reach your 2014 goals – get accountable first and then get moving

I’ve found when I want to accomplish something BIG – I need accountability. And action. But normally action comes as the result of being accountable. Accountability works – it just does. We all know what happens when we agree to meet a friend at the gym  – WE GO! On the other hand if I just tell myself I’m going to go to the gym today I can come up with a million excuses not to go.

I hired my first business coach in my mid twenties. I was growing a direct sales team and wanted to be a speaker. I had no clue how to do either so I asked for help. I didn’t come up with this idea on my own – a friend told me I needed a coach so I listened to her and hired one. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. She was a great coach but it wasn’t really about her. It was about how I performed when I had to check in with someone every week. She often did nothing – she’d just listen. And through her listening and the homework she gave me each week – I grew. I began reaching my goals and completing things I had put off for months. And it wasn’t rocket science. I just did what she asked me to do.

Yet why don’t I do what I know I should do all by myself? Sometime I do but others time, especially when it’s something BIG and scary, I avoid doing it like the plague. I know I should do it and I really want to do it but I just can’t seem to get out of my own way. Has that happened to you? You set a goal – a really BIG goal – and then you do every but what you want to do. It’s happened to me more times than I’d like to admit. And when it begins to happen on a regular basis I know I need help – I need an accountability partner.

Are you stuck? Are you avoiding the BIG, scary goals in your life or business? If so, look around. Who can you ask to help hold your accountable so that you can finish 2014 strong?
