Seven Ways to Become a Better Public Speaker
by Amanda Buchanan
Public speaking is one of Americans’ biggest fears. As an advisor, it’s a very important part of your practice. Whether it’s face-to-face interaction with a client or a seminar full of prospective clients, being comfortable with it is an essential part of day-to-day life.
Michelle Neujahr is an entrepreneur and professional speaker with more than 10 years of experience. She is also a published author and owner of Neujahr Development Company. Her programs are designed to motivate individuals to take immediate action, maximize their potential, increase productivity and make a positive difference in their workplace. She has given more than 1,000 presentations nationwide. The company provides training and consulting services to organizations in the areas of change, leadership and communication.
To improve your practice, Neujahr provides the following tips to sharpen your public speaking skills:
-
Practice, practice, practice. Join toastmasters, volunteer to speak at local events and practice at work. The more you speak, the better you will be.
-
Have someone in the business of speaking critique you. Ask for two or three ways to improve.
-
Before you open your mouth, take a deep breath and look at the audience. Connect with their eyes, take in their energy and begin.
-
Keep it simple. Have three main points and use numerous real-life examples for each one.
-
Make all movements purposeful. Moving just to move or out of nervousness is annoying for the audience.
-
Slow down. People often speak too fast when they are nervous. Slow down. Take something to the podium with you that will serve as your reminder to slow down.
-
Have fun. The audience wants you to succeed and they want to have fun. Be yourself and enjoy your audience.
